Colossal autobahn pile-up in Germany

Germany suffered one of its worst autobahn pile-ups last weekend when a total of 259 vehicles ploughed into one another on the main east-west motorway. Sixty-six people were injured, including children, and ten victims were fighting for their lives after the collisions.
The crashes included a series of three pile-ups as holidaymakers headed, in their tens of thousands on to the German motorways, just before the start of the school holidays. The collisions happened on a 20-mile section of the A2 autobahn which links Berlin with the Dutch border near the city of Braunschweig, Hanover. Heavy rain suddenly gave way to bright sunshine, leaving the road slippery and dangerous.
Over 350 firefighters and other emergency workers were in action to help clear the carriage ways and get the injured to hospital.
