In-flight entertainment could become obsolete thanks to a simple plug socket. The recent wave of fliers bringing their own sources of entertainment on board, including iPods, complete with USB sockets and charging stations, has made the airline analysts take a fresh look at facilities on board.
Says Peter Harbinson, analyst from the Center of Asia-Pacific Aviation in Sydney, to Reuters: “There are so many reasons for airlines to change the way they work right now.
“The biggest advantage for airlines is the weight of the IFE equipment. Fuel burned, regular engineering checks, and licensing fees to movie studios all add up to a considerable amount of money for airlines.”
Panasonic pushing for power sources
Companies such as Panasonic have been pushing for the introduction of power sources, and they feel that the only reason passengers now turn to the in-flight screen entertainment, is when they run out of battery. An onboard power source would allow users to enjoy their own entertainment, plus allow them to work much more efficiently with the internet.
