Ten top tips for travellers at Airports

Budget airlines can provide you with cheap, comfortable travel to Europe and the rest of the world. They can also prove frustrating and irritating, which can make your airport experience unpleasant. Make sure your travel plans are as hassle free as possible by reading the following ten points:

1. Check your flight details

Thoroughly check your flight details before leaving home. Most airlines and airports have websites, which often report any delays before you leave home. This will relieve a lot of stress at the airport when you realise your flight has been delayed 2 hours and you have someone picking you up at the other end.

2. Tickets or ticketless?

Understand your flight reservation. Most budget airlines in the UK are ticketless, and you only need to present your booking code at the check in desk, which you will be given at the time of online booking. Read the small print on every booking form and don´t miss anything. If you have any questions, ask them before you get to the airport to avoid delays.

3. Directions to the airport

Make sure you familiarise yourself with directions to the airport, and equally importantly, make sure you go to the correct terminal. Airport websites should include helpful maps of how to arrive there, and also information about airport facilities and amenities, including car hire and car rentals.

4. Be on time

Set off from home in plenty of time. It is better to arrive early than to be held up by a traffic jam and miss your flight all together. Security is also much more stringent these days, and queues are longer. Aim to arrive at the airport at least 2 hrs 30 mins before your flight is due to depart.

5. Eat before you travel

Don´t fall victim to the rip-off prices charged for food and drinks at the airport. Eat before you travel, and you won´t want anything else before you arrive at your destination. Prices on board the aircraft are also ridiculously high, and although they may advertise budget prices for the flight, these definitely do not apply once you are on board.

6. Banned substances

Make sure you are aware of any banned substances you cannot take on board an aircraft. Check the airline website for information about any banned substances to avoid delays at security, and having your goods confiscated.

7. Bring your own books

Bring reading materials, including newspapers, magazine, books and games to keep yourself and your children entertained on the flight.

8. Pack intelligently

Pack smartly, and don´t bring the whole wardrobe if it is not necessary. All flights have weight restrictions for luggage so make sure you know the limits before you pack. Also, don´t include any weapons or fireworks which could result in you being thrown off the plane. Even Christmas crackers are banned because of the explosive element inside, so think about what you are packing and whether it is legal.

9. Comfortable shoes and clothes

Always wear comfortable shoes and clothes when you are planning to travel by air. Most airports in the UK now insist you remove your shoes when passing through security, so wear a pair that are easy to get off and slip back on. Wear loose, comfortable clothing which will not crease.

10. Remember your manners

Security at airports is vital to protect us from terrorist attacks. Bear this in mind, when the security guard pulls you over, or insists on seeing your travel documents for a second time. He is only doing his job, so be polite, smile and you will get through security much quicker.
