10 top holiday tips

One of the best things about travelling to new places is experiencing new cultures, tasting different food and meeting new people.  Travelling not only broadens our horizons, but it widens our knowledge and helps us relax. Make sure your holiday is as enjoyable as possible by remembering the following holiday tips:

1. Things to do list

Before setting off on holiday, make a ´things to do´ list.  This way, important travel documents and medications will not be forgotten.

2. Allow plenty of time

Leave plenty of time to get to the airport or train station and allow for unexpected delays or traffic jams. It is better to get there too early than too late so aim to get to the airport at least two and a half hours before your flight is due to leave.

3. Look after your belongings

Whether you are travelling to Spain, Italy, France, Malta, Portugal, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Greece or any other country in the world, always take good care of your belongings. Remember, thieves operate everywhere so always be alert and never leave your bags unattended.

4. Hotel security

If you are staying in a holiday hotel, place your personal belongings in the hotel safe.

5. Be sensible with your valuables

Never flaunt your valuables if you are visiting a place where poverty levels are high.  Keep your expensive jewellery for special nights out and don´t wear it when you are roaming around the city.

6. Special requirements

If you have any special requests or requirements at your holiday hotel, ask before you arrive, and you should get the help you need.

7. Be respectful

Inform yourself about any particular customs or religious practices in the country you are travelling to before you leave home.  This type of information should be available from your tour operator, and can even apply to some European countries such as Turkey, so find out before you fly.

8. Travel itinerary

If you are planning to travel around when you reach your destination, try to arrange your travel itinerary before leaving home.  This will help you get around by hire car, car rentals or public transport.  Decide also what you want to see and where you want to go to avoid delays when you arrive at your destination.

9. Spontaneous travel

Some things are beyond our control, like the weather.  If the weather puts a dampener on your holiday plans, be spontaneous and go where the mood takes you. Some of the best holidays result from unforeseen circumstances and you can still have a great time by veering away from any fixed itinerary.

10. Speak the lingo

Learn at least a little bit of the local language.  Ask for directions and greet people in their own language and they are likely to be much more helpful.  Nobody cares if you make a mistake, but at least show some effort. Make the most of your holiday and you will come back relaxed, happy and ready to take on the world.
